This morning I decided to look back at my Omaha play online over the past month and well for the most part it wasn’t that bad but it wasn’t great either.

Cash Games

Over 7700+ hands for the month I was down $34.53 at the .05/.10 cash tables. I found myself in a showdown with the second best holdings far too often in March. So was I playing bad or just getting sucked out on more often than in the first two months of 2011?

March 2011 PLO Cash

Please click the image for the full size graph… it’s too wide to place the full sized image in the post.

My All-In EV was somewhat better clocking it at -17.93 over that period but looking strictly at that number would indicate that willie_hayes had a lot more play bad than run bad occur over the prior Month. So I wanted to dig deeper into things to find the true story… Looking at my worst losing hands over that time told a different tale. To be blunt I haven’t been doing well with 2 Aces in the hole. 3 of my biggest losing hands in March came with some of the strongest starting hands. Let’s look at each of them in some more detail.

Here it’s a clear case of Run Bad. Not much of a choice for our villain is 33% dog PF and even with his 2 pair and the baby flush draw he improves to just 36%. All the chips go in with willie_hayes holding the nuts and a 64% edge that evaporates with the disastrous turn card the 4d which makes the flush for him… needing a 9 6 or 4 on the river to fill up but that wouldn’t come. Run Bad.

Tough spot here as even though I had two aces he did also. Starting of as a slight 49% dog the flop did improve my holdings as I paired the 6 but he would gain a strait draw on the flop and connect on the turn with the deuce of spades. Leaving me looking for an 8% chance for 3 outer five on the river. It never came. Kinda tough to put this one in the Bad Play category with willie_hayes starting the hand short-stacked (as per usual) with 43BB facing a 3 bet from an aggro who’s seeing a lot of flops (57% VPIP) and holding a hand [7h Ah 6d As] that holds an edge over most… not sure how I really see this even with the 20/20 vision provided by hindsight.

I had a few other big time losers this month but in further review many of them I found willie_hayes to be on the wrong end of a suckout on the turn or river. Sure there was a few set over set situations where I should have gotten away but by far the majority of the biggest losers came in hands where I held two aces. Of the top 20 losers 8 fell into that category. I’ve identified this is an area where I will need to improve if I’m to be successful online player and I will be working towards that goal.

Tournaments

So it wasn’t the worst month for willie_hayes in the PLO MTT’s in 40 tournaments for the month we put up an ITM of 20% and 53% ROI. Only two final tables in March for a 5% finishing 3rd and 9th. That’s what I’m looking for really to reach the Final Table in 5% or more of the MTT’s that I play. Once you reach the final table anything can really happen from there… and this month in both cases the anything that occured was anything but good for willie_hayes… Here’s my tourney graph for the month:

March 2011 PLO Tournaments

Let me set the scene here Seat 6 on the button has been seeing just about every flop (83% VPIP) and raising a good chunk of those also. He’s slaying the field we’re down to 3 players now out of a couple hundo at the start but whenver I get it in against him I double thru 3 or 4 times at least in last 60 hands or so. Here’s the hand:

No overs and no flush draw. I bet the pot. Thinking back I liked this call even less didn’t give him credit for a set here really… he’s just been so loose I think A3 or 4 here.. half my stack in at this point in both the hand and the tournament it’s almost always going in on the turn.

Now fast forward to my other final table finish in March. Here it’s just broken down to 9 to create the final table but only 6 are dealt into this hand. Starting the hand willie_hayes is in the middle of the pack in chips.

Looking back at the hand it was a pretty big suckout. I was 78% on the turn. He raked in a 250k plus pot with just 8 players left in the tournament. Busting in 9th paid $26.53 leaving me at +$23.23 had I been fortunate to win that hand I would’ve had a great chance to increase my winnings in this tournament.

Overall it wasn’t that bad a month. Could have been excellent but it could have been worse in the end as I snuck in a late run last night for a 15th place finish and booked a $20+ win on the cash side. Looking to improve on my weaknesses -> profit in the cash games and improve my FT% and ROI% in the MTT’s in April. I look forward to telling you all about it again on May 1st.

Edit: Just noticed that my 15th place finish from last night does not count in my March stats as the 11:35PM tourney didn’t wrap up (well for me at least) until almost 3:30AM so it will count towards my April stats.

As avid followers of the @acpokerblog twitter feed surely already know have an Omaha problem… well I guess it’s not a problem really but it’s just that I find hold’em just doesn’t do it for me anymore of late. Why would I want to have just two hole cards when I could have four? So late Friday evening as I watched the night’s NCAA action (ok listened to the TV mostly would be more accurate) and multitasked by I chasing a milestone hand at three .05/.10 PLO tables on pokerstars and playing in the $2.20 PLO tourney… somewhere in there… I learned about the weekly Saturday $100 PLO tournament at the Taj. Super. I can play in that. Oh wait it’s Saturday going to need to appease my wonderful wife in some regard to get my hall pass stamped.

Saturday morning comes I reveal my plans to Kim and she’s like well you better help me clean before you leave. Nice. Love you babes. I oblige and begin to move things around a bit, start a load of laundry and vacuum the house before I hit the road. Late at 2:10 sigh. I call Spoons and plan to meet him at the Lacey rest area. He beats me there by ten minutes and greets me with an elongated “braaaaaaaah” he quickly gets into story mode and I show him this which at the time I didn’t even realize how funny that was. We roll on down the GSP still late getting to the Taj at like 3:30… We’re rushing to the poker room but neither of us has our Taj card. Sigh. Into the line of 20 people to have a new card printed by this time its almost 10 to 4 and we hustle to the tournament desk. When we get there the woman is like “the Omaha tournament… um yea… you’re late”. I’m like dang the tournament is closed but then she says “well there’s you two and one other guy”. So then I’m like OK so she’s going to let us in she’s just waiting more people to make a new table but then she goes “well would you want to play just the three of you? the other guy left his name…”. OK wait what? So Spoons and I +1 is all that showed up for this damn that’s a bummer. She let us know that there was a 4:15 tournament but I wasn’t really feeling it so we left the poker room to regroup.

Whenever I go down to AC I *try* to drop a $10 in Wheel of Fortune slot machine for my wife but there’s some kind of slots promo going on this day so there’s a large amount of seniors and the old lady mafia has all of them on lock down. We grab a spot near the Wheel slots at some impostors that also have a bonus wheel. I drop my $10 in lose it all in 5 minutes or less and wait for the 8oz Bud Light I had ordered to arrive. Before that happens Spoons pumps his machine full of Andrew Jackson’s to no avail no bonus spin for you… Do Not Pass GO… Do Not Collect $200! We wander around he stops at the craps table I leave to go play some $1/$2 NLHE.

I buy in for $100 and sit down at the table. Not a playable hand in the first 45 minutes barely saw a flop. Then I look down at pocket queens under the gun. I raise to $8 and it goes something like this from here… call fold call fold fold call call $40 in the pot flop comes out 5s 4h 7s check I raise $15 call fold fold call $75 in the pot now. The turn comes out 6c it’s checked to me by the big blind I have $63 left in front of me I take a good 30 seconds to consider my options and then shove. The player to my left does not like it and folds quickly now it comes back to the big blind as I sit very still he looks at his hole cards again in front of his stack and I catch a peek I saw the Ace of Spades and what I thought at the time was the Ace Clubs. Now I think he has me crushed he debates for another 30 seconds and then calls I’m like I just have queens and he shows As4s looking for an Ace or any spade on the river. Alas I would fade them as the 8c would fall on the river. After the hand is over and I rake in the winnings I tell the man that he showed me his card there on his second look he wasn’t too happy about that. Spoons happened to show up shortly after I won that pot and he sat down for a bit at nearby table. I didn’t have many more hands to play and we left about 45 minutes later… In the end stopping off at Five Guys on the return trip may just have been the highlight of the day.

Took me a minute but I just dug up some info on the massive bad beat jackpot that had been swelling for weeks at trump. Unlike the one at Harrahs which pools from all properties in town and pays everyone playing in any of the poker rooms at the time a small taste the Trump one pays 50% to the winner or rather loser of the hand 25% percent to the winner of the hand and splits the remaining 25% amongst the other players at the table. Here’s a slice from the casino city times about the massive hand that broke the bank:

Jay Marlapudi wins the Bad Beat Poker Jackpot at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort poker room, and took home a check for $334,070.50. He officially lost the hand to Walter Alexander Ayers Cockeysville, MD who had a Royal Flush.

Ayers took home a check 2nd Place check for $167,035.25.The seven remaining players split $167,035.25, giving each of the other players at the table $23,862.18.

Check this link for a look at the whole article.

Here’s a look at the winner:

The clash of monster hands greatly rewarded the winner Jayson Marlapudi with over 300k for just one hand. It was that type of reward many players had been seeking as the filled up the $1-$2 and $2-$4 tables at the Taj for weeks. Which lead to many players steering clear of the recently completed WSOP Circuit at Caesars in favor of chasing the elusive bad beat at the Taj… and with over 300k goin to the Pennsylvania player for just one hand I can’t really question their decision much.

Only nine players remain in the hunt for the Main Event circuit ring and the automatic birth in the upcoming WSOP Circuit Championship in Las Vegas later this year. The chip leader heading into the final day is Maryland native Patrick Houchins who will sit down with 1.62 million. He’ll be joined by last years winner of this event Roland Israelashvili who will surely be looking to repeat as champion and add another ring to his collection. Yesterday’s chip leader Frank Argano’s run good would not last. As he failed to make today’s final table but he would cash however as he exited in 25th place. We’re packing it up now and jumping on the parkway to bring you some live coverage of the final table from Caesars beginning at 2PM today.

Day One of the Main Event is now in the books and just a few familiar names remain in the field of 81 players. 442 players would enter creating a total prize pool of $633,110 featuring a top prize of $139,284 to be awarded to the winner on Sunday. The winner will also automatically qualify for the WSOP Circuit Championship in Las Vegas later this year. Most of the acpokerblog favorites would not reach Day 2 as Josh Brikis, Paul Volpe, Mike Sica and Will Fallia each would make the early exit from the tournament. One player still in the game that we do follow on twitter is Daniel “wildman75″ Buzgon we wish him luck today. At the close of Day 1 the chip leader would be Frank Argano who scooped a few large pots late on Day 1 and spring boarded into the lead. Let’s see if Frank can continue to run good Saturday and take the chip lead into Sunday. We’ll check back in later this evening with a Day 2 recap with live coverage from the scene to come on Sunday. Follow acpb on twitter for update today. Check out the PokerNews website for more Day 1 info.

Event 5 drew 477 players to the Atlantic City Caesars but I venture to say that none traveled further than Toyko Japan native Jaeik Cho. When it was all said and done the long trip to New Jersey would not hinder him as he would best 476 others to claim the $29,843 top prize and the ring. In case you where counting that’s SomewherElsington 5 NJ 0 in ring events so far this circuit… maybe 2011 is just not our year… In any event congrats to Jaeik on your first major tournament victory. We certainly hope you enjoyed your visit to the Garden State and also I would like to apologize for what passes as good sushi at times in this area. Here’s a quick look at the remaining players who made the final table:

386 players entered and in the end another New Yorker would earn the win. Brooklyn native Paul Lambrakis takes home the ring and $41,186 for a nice payday. He is known as Pauly Nuts for his tight play which paid off late in the match. He would overcome a severe deficit in chips beating second place finisher Pittsburgh player Mun Nguyen who held nearly a 4-1 advantage as play began. An aside: New Jersey needs to step it up here at Caesars… Here’s the rest of the players who made the final table:

With a 500k prize pool on the line and the WSOP Circuit across town this one was sure to attract a crowd. Only 308 players made the trek to the Borgata Poker Room in search of the top prize. Leaving the Borgata to bump up the prize pool by 32k. All of that was no matter to Las Vegas professional player Chris Tryba. In the end he would amass all of the chips and he pockets $131,257 for the victory. Chris continued his successful trip East as he following up his 6th place finish in the Caesars WSOP Circuit Event 3 with the win here at the Borgata… We’ll expect to see him in action for a few more tournaments here this week. Congrats on the win Chris. Here’s a look at the other final table members:

1. CHRISTOPHER TRYBA (LAS VEGAS, NV): $131,257
2. SEUNGHWAN LEE (ALBERTSON, NY): $72,921
3. JAY SHUMSEY (ASOTIRA, NY): $45,211
4. JOSHUA SUPSAK (LINWOOD, NJ): $36,461
5. ERACLES PANAYIOTOU (TOMS RIVER, NJ): $28,196
6. JINHING CHIN (NEW YORK, NY): $23,821
7. JOHN ANDRESS (DOYLESTOWN, PA): $19,203
8. JOHN ZOLDAK (STATEN ISLAND, NY): $14,341
9. PAUL VOLPE (WEST CHESTER, PA): $9,723

Check out the full payout list over here at the Borgata Poker Blog.

Love to see a player from Toms River among those who found a nice payday, but I don’t know Mr. Panayiotou… but I’m more interested in Philadelphia player Paul Volpe. I recently started following him on twitter and this guy has been tearing it up in the online realm to kick off his 2011 with a big bang. He shipped the Sunday Million back in January for $253,895 and raked in another 6 figure score in the recently wrapped up FTOPS. It looks like he’s going to be force to be reckoned with away from the mouse pad and on the felt as well… Surely we will be need to pay attention to Paul whenever he’s in town. Josh Brikis would find his way to cashier’s window again finishing 27th good for $3,646 but he’s still searching for that big score to right his 2011.

We’re into Day 2 of the Borgata 500k Guaranteed and there’s a few players that we’re following in the twittersphere… Paul Volpe known as @Paulgees81 in that realm is among those still in action and also those who’ve already locked up a payday he’s sitting at around 700k at the moment… Also @JBrikis returned to the Borgata looking to turn around his lack luster (so far) 2011… It seems that he may still be in action but we’ve yet to see any tweets from the acpb favorite in the past hour or so. Another Pennsylvania player Eric Wasserson aka @gpokerg made the trip East to the Bdorgata in 2011. Good luck to both Paul, Josh and Eric in their pursuit of the top prize. We’ll follow along this evening and look to catch up with the remaining field at the Borgata Poker Room on Tuesday.

Dennis continues his solid play of late as he recently finished 3rd in Event 18 of the recently completed Borgata Winter Poker Open taking home a nice payday of $38,528 at the end of January.
